Last year, I was commissioned by the Friends of Apley Woods to create a magical entrance archway to the local ancient woodland. I wanted to use my skills to create an archway that would transport visitors into a fantastical realm. To achieve this, I decided to make the leaves and entwine the lettering with decorative scrollwork that represented vines or brambles, giving a wild and natural feel.

Using my imagination and creativity, I set out to produce something that was not just a simple sign. I wanted it to be a true work of art, with a hint of magic that would enchant visitors. To create the leaves, I used heat-coloured stainless steel. While the first few leaves I produced were disappointing, a chance visit to a national trust property, Wightwick Manor and Gardens, sparked what can only be described as a “pre-Raphaelite eureka moment.”

This led me to research and draw more leaves, which I plasma cut freehand and then ground the shape and texture. I then used an oxy-propane torch to heat-colour the stainless steel, which felt like the modern-day equivalent of using Harry Potter’s elder wand.

Recently, I returned to the arch to freshen up the lettering. I’m proud to say that the arch still stands as a testament to my passion for combining traditional metalworking techniques with imagination and creativity.

Recently, the arch was repainted to freshen up the lettering. It still stands as a testament to my passion for combining traditional metalworking techniques with imagination and creativity.

Stainless steel butterflies for a lighting project remind me of Damian Hirst’s butterfly Paintings. here’s a little information on that

Whilst the butterfly is one of Hirst’s most enduring “universal triggers”, in the ‘Kaleidoscope’ paintings he differs from his use of it in earlier works. Previously, the inclusion of live butterflies, as in the installation ‘In and Out of Love’ (1991), or whole dead ones in the butterfly monochromepaintings, was partially an exploration of “the way the real butterfly can destroy the ideal (birthday-card) kind of love; the symbol exists apart from the real thing.”[2] Recalling someone once saying to him: “Butterflies are beautiful, but it’s a shame they have disgusting hairy bodies in the middle,” Hirst chose to use only the iridescent wings in the ‘Kaleidoscope’ paintings, divorcing the butterflies from “the real thing”.[3] Titles such as ‘The Most Beautiful Thing in The World’ (2003) reflect the idealised beauty they encapsulate.

Although my work is not fully related to the above text, I fulfilled my customer’s request by creating steel globe lighting shades, adorned with over 200 handmade butterflies. The entire production process was carried out in-house by me.

As I was heat colouring the butterflies in batches, I realized that arranging them in a circular formation could inspire another artwork. Stay tuned for more images as this lighting design work continues to develop.

Handmade metal bed images

I took this detailed shot of my handmade curly glass marble bed at the Old Chapel in Coalbrookdale where I used to have my workshop. The bed is made entirely of metal and crafted by hand. The photo was taken by the talented photographer Colin Hawkins, whose work can be found at www.colinhawkins.co.uk. Thank you, Colin, for capturing this stunning shot.

2015-06-11 15.32.01

I must admit, the shot I captured with my phone is not quite up to Colin’s professional standards. In my defence, I was juggling a lot at the time – holding a lit oxy-propane torch with a “pepper pot” nozzle in one hand while trying to snap a photo with my ringing phone in the other.

Despite the shaky hands and lack of focus, the image still manages to capture the essence of my craft. The photo shows the hot clasps of steel being expertly bent around the scrolls on my handmade metal beds, with the steel washers cut to size and ready to hold the glass marbles in place.

So while my photo skills may not be the safest or most polished, the result is still an impressive display of craftsmanship and a beautiful bed.
